| Description: |
It is likely that zoning has been discussed, and in some cases, implemented, in your municipality. Zoning can be very beneficial as a tool for managing growth and protecting a community, but can bring with it many controversial issues.
The decision to zone should not be taken lightly. Townships considering zoning should do their homework, and this workshop is the perfect place to begin. Instructors will discuss zoning and its relationship to land use planning, using recent court cases as examples. They will discuss the importance of developing a comprehensive plan that will allow municipalities to set goals and objectives for both the long- and short-term. All of the topics covered during the session will help attendees develop a comprehensive plan before it is too late.
Nearly every municipality has encountered a major unwanted land use issue, and those encounters have altered residents' perceptions of zoning. It is important to have a plan in place in case such an event would occur because without it, the community would be left to accept the unwanted change. Attendees will leave this session armed with the information they need to begin (or continue) discussions on zoning in their area. |
| Outline: |
During this workshop, instructors will engage attendees in discussion on the following subject areas: >Review of zoning powers and procedures >Review of recent court decisions on subdivision and zoning ordinance regulations and procedures >Review of recent MPC amendments including: -Acts 67 and 68 of 2000 -Act 127 of 2000 -Act 2 of 2002 -Act 43 of 2002 -Act 214 of 2002 -Act 215 of 2002 Practical application of case law and MPC amendments to everyday zoning and subdivision decisions by municipal officials. |
